HISTORY OF BERNESE MOUNTAIN
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a Swiss breed with a history rooted in farming communities in the Swiss Alps. They were primarily used as farm dogs, pulling carts and guarding livestock. The breed likely descended from Roman mastiffs brought to Switzerland by the Romans, which interbred with local herding and guard dogs. Over time, the Bernese Mountain Dog became invaluable to Swiss farmers and herders.
They faced a decline in population during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the rise of industrialization. However, their population was preserved by dedicated enthusiasts. The breed gained international recognition in the 20th century and is now cherished as family pets worldwide.They have a striking tricolor coat but have a shorter average lifespan and are prone to certain health issues.
